Signs of a Failing Alternator vs a Dead Battery

Battery and alternator faults share a lot of the same symptoms. Here's how to actually tell them apart before you pay for the wrong part.

Signs of a Failing Alternator vs a Dead Battery

One of the most common mix-ups we see on the road is drivers replacing a battery, only to find the car dies again a week later — because the real problem was the alternator all along. The two faults share enough symptoms to confuse each other, so here's how to actually tell them apart.

What each part actually does

The battery provides the initial burst of power to start the engine. Once running, the alternator takes over, generating electricity to keep the battery charged and power everything else — lights, stereo, air conditioning, infotainment — while you drive. If the alternator fails, the car can often still start and run for a while purely on the battery's stored charge, until that charge runs out.

Why guessing wrong costs you twice

If you replace the battery but the actual fault is the alternator, the new battery will simply drain flat again within days, because nothing is recharging it properly while you drive. You end up paying for a battery you didn't need, and still have to pay for the alternator on top. The reverse is also true — a genuinely flat or failing battery won't be fixed by an alternator replacement.

How we tell the difference

A proper diagnosis involves testing both components separately: a load test on the battery to check its actual capacity, and a charging system test on the alternator to confirm it's putting out the correct voltage while the engine runs. This takes only a few minutes and removes the guesswork entirely.

What to do if you're seeing these signs

If your car is showing any combination of these symptoms, it's worth having both tested together rather than assuming which one is at fault. See our alternator replacement and battery replacement pages, or call 0411 949 959 and we'll come out and test both on the spot.
