10 Warning Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Die

A dying battery rarely fails without warning. Here are the signs to watch for, so it doesn't catch you out at the worst possible moment.

10 Warning Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Die

A flat battery is one of the most common reasons Perth drivers call a mobile mechanic — and it's also one of the most preventable. Most batteries give off warning signs for days or even weeks before they finally give up. Here's what to watch for.

1. Slow or laboured engine cranking

If the engine takes longer than usual to turn over, or sounds sluggish rather than sharp when you turn the key, that's often the earliest and clearest sign your battery is losing capacity.

2. Dashboard warning lights

A battery warning light, or dimmer-than-usual dashboard lights on startup, can point to a battery struggling to hold or deliver charge.

3. Dim or flickering headlights

Headlights that seem noticeably dimmer than usual, especially when idling, or that flicker when you rev the engine, are a classic sign of a weakening battery or a charging system issue.

4. Electrical accessories acting up

Power windows moving slower than normal, a stereo that resets itself, or interior lights that seem dimmer can all point to insufficient voltage from the battery.

5. A clicking sound when you turn the key

A rapid clicking noise (rather than the engine turning over) usually means the battery doesn't have enough charge to engage the starter motor.

6. The battery is over 3-4 years old

Most car batteries in Perth's climate last around 3 to 5 years, sometimes less given our hot summers, which are hard on battery chemistry. If you don't remember the last time it was replaced, it's worth having it tested.

7. A swollen or misshapen battery case

Extreme heat can cause a battery case to swell or bulge. If yours looks visually different from its usual shape, it's likely nearing failure and should be replaced rather than waiting for it to die completely.

8. Corrosion around the terminals

A white, ashy build-up around the battery terminals can interfere with the electrical connection, mimicking the symptoms of a dying battery even if the battery itself is otherwise fine. Either way, it's worth having checked.

9. A smell of rotten eggs under the bonnet

This distinctive sulphur smell can indicate a battery leaking gas, often due to overcharging or internal damage — worth getting checked promptly, as a leaking battery can be a safety concern.

10. The engine starts fine but stalls or dies while driving

This one is more often the alternator than the battery — the alternator recharges the battery while you drive, so if it's failing, your car might start on the battery's remaining charge but then stall once that's used up. We test both when we come out, since the symptoms can overlap.

What to do if you spot these signs

Don't wait for a Monday morning no-start to find out your battery was on its way out. A battery and charging system test only takes a few minutes, and if a replacement is needed, we carry batteries on the van and can usually fit a new one in the same visit — see our battery replacement service for details, or call 0411 949 959 if you're already seeing any of the signs above.
